“Festival of National Tourist Interest”

The Ministry of Economy, through the General Secretariat of Tourism, granted in August 2001 to the Misterio de Obanos Foundation the title of Festival of National Tourist Interest, thus responding to the request processed by the Government of Navarra on the initiative of the Obanos Mystery Foundation and with the express support of the Town Council.

The declaration of Festival of National Tourist Interest is granted to those festivals or events that represent a manifestation of cultural values and popular tradition, with special consideration for their ethnological characteristics, and that have special importance as a tourist attraction.

For the granting of the declaration, the antiquity of the celebration of the party or event in question, its continuity over time and the originality and diversity of the acts that are carried out are taken into account.

At the initiative of the Mystery of Obanos Foundation, the General Directorate of Commerce and Tourism of the Government of Navarra processed the request in April 2001, including a report from the City Council on the most relevant aspects of the representation of the Mystery of Obanos. The response from the Ministry came in August of the same year, through a letter from the General Secretary of Tourism, Juan José Güemes Barrios, in which he communicated the decision to grant the aforementioned festival the requested honorary title.

With this declaration, the representation of the Mystery of Obanos will be integrated into the promotion actions of the Festivals of National Tourist Interest developed by the Secretary of State for Commerce and Tourism.

This recognition has represented for the Misterio de Obanos Foundation the most relevant event with the greatest projection for the future of the current year 2001.

In the practical field, it means the integration of the representation of the Mystery of Obanos within the promotional actions of the Festivals of National Tourist Interest developed by the Secretary of State for Commerce and Tourism.

From the very beginning, the Mystery Foundation was fully aware of the importance of this step. For this reason, he spared no effort to give formal consistency to what until then was nothing more than a popular recognition: The consideration of the Mystery of San Guillén and Santa Felicia as one of the most prestigious cultural manifestations and tourist projection, along with others of similar features such as the Mystery of Elche.
