Obanos hosts tomorrow a new edition of the National Choral Competition of Medieval and Renaissance Music.

Three choirs will participate in the fourth edition of the national competition organized by the Mystery of Obanos Foundation.

“A unique event in Navarra, a musical and cultural reference linked to the Camino de Santiago and the Mystery of Obanos”. With these words Juan Manuel Rubio, president of the Mystery of Obanos Foundation presented this morning a new edition of the national competition of Medieval and Renaissance Music Arnotegui organized by the entity, event that will take place tomorrow Saturday, from 19:00 hours, in the church of San Juan Bautista de Obanos. The presentation, held at the Teatro Gayarre, was also attended by the director of the Chamber Choir of Pamplona, David Galvez, and the mayoress of the town, Arantxa Hernandez.

Three choral groups from Navarra (Coral La Asunción, from Pamplona), Madrid (Coro de Cámara Salix Cantor) and Guipúzcoa (Alboka Abesbatza, from Lasarte-Oria) will take part in the competition, selected among the ten applicants who have responded to the call.

Each ensemble will perform a varied repertoire of a Cappella songs from the 14th to 16th centuries, and all three will have to sing the piece Stella Splendens, included in the “Libre Vermell de Montserrat”, from the 14th century. The musical event will also count with the special collaboration of the soprano Raquel Fernández and the tenor Eduardo Zubicoa, accompanied on the piano by Daniel Gutiérrez.

The director of the Chamber Choir of Pamplona, member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, has valued the quality of the three participating groups and the success of the event “especially considering that the last edition was last September and only a few months have passed”. Gálvez, who has taken part in the technical committee in charge of the selection of participants, has stressed the importance of taking into account the spirit of original music. In this sense, “respect for the precepts of this type of music” will be especially valued. In fact, this year, as a novelty, a prize has been established for the best conductor, valued at 200 euros. The prizes for the participating choirs will be 1,200, 700 and 400 euros in the order established by the jury. There will also be an audience award of 200 euros for the best choir.

The jury that will decide tomorrow in Obanos the classification of the participating choirs is composed of the famed composers Teresa Catalán Sánchez and Tomás Marco, as well as the recently appointed director of the Religious Music Week of Cuenca, Andoni Sierra.

Thus, the church of San Juan Bautista will gather tomorrow Saturday afternoon an important group of professionals and amateurs of the cultured music in an event “that will project the best image of Obanos as a crossroads of roads and cultures”, expressed the mayoress of the town. Arantxa Hernández invited to come to this town of Valdizarbe to enjoy a first class musical show.
