VI CHORAL COMPETITION OF MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE MUSIC
AND RENAISSANCE MUSIC CONTEST “ARNOTEGUI”.

RULES
ORGANIZERS: Competition organized by the OBANOS MYSTERY FOUNDATION and by the
by the “ARNOTEGUI” BROTHERHOOD OF ERMITAÑOS.
1 – DATE:
The contest will be held on a single day, this being SATURDAY, May 17, 2025 in the Church of San Juan Bautista, in Obanos (Navarra), at 7:00 pm and will be in recognition of our deceased president of the Obanos Mystery Foundation, Juan Manuel Rubio, in 2024.
2 – PRIZES:
The following prizes will be assigned:
1st Classified: – 1500€ + Trophy.
2nd Classified: – 1000 Euros
3rd Classified: – 700€.
Audience Award: – 200€.
Diploma of the Jury for the best direction.
3 – PARTICIPANTS:
National choral groups of mixed and/or equal voices may apply, and must have a minimum of 16 choristers.
4 – ABOUT THE REPERTOIRE:
The repertoire presented must meet the following requirements:
Compulsory work: “O Virgo Splendens” belonging to the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat and piece included in the music of the Mystery of Obanos, It will be sung first and the arrangement, structure, vocal and instrumental organic and other interpretive issues are at the discretion of the choir itself.
Free program: The works chosen by each choir, together with the compulsory work, must not exceed 20 minutes of actual music time (pauses or applause will not be counted). The choir that does not respect these times will be penalized.
The entire program must be performed “A CAPELLA”, although one work of the free program and the compulsory work may include instruments of “medievalist” inspiration (aerophones, chordophones and determined and indeterminate percussion).
All the works must be catalogued as “MEDIEVAL and RENAISSANCE MUSIC” (17th century INCLUDED) or, if they are later, they must have a marked “medievalist spirit”. In any case, the repertoire must be approved by the Artistic Commission of the Competition.
The titles of the works, as well as the authors chosen by each choir, will be notified at the time of registration and cannot be modified afterwards.
At the end of the Competition, the 3 selected choirs will sing together the compulsory work, which will be conducted by the conductor of the choir that has been awarded the Jury’s Diploma for the best conducting.
5 – JURY:
The jury will be chosen by the Artistic Commission of the Competition from among persons with recognized curriculum and prestige in the national and international choral world. For this sixth edition its composition will be published at a later date.
The Jury appointed by the Organization will evaluate the performance of each of the participating Choirs, both in the technical-vocal, expressive and stylistic aspects, as well as in the difficulty of the chosen pieces and the staging.
The Jury will evaluate the performance of each director, taking into account technical and expressive issues as well as their ability to manage the repertoire, its configuration and staging.
The final result will be notified at the end of the performances on the day of the competition. Its decision will be final. The prizes are indivisible.
The public will be able to evaluate the performance of each Choir, by filling in the form that will be given to them at the entrance of the competition and that will be collected while the jury deliberates.
6 – REGISTRATIONS:
Entries may be submitted from December 5, 2024 through February 15, 2025 by sending to the following address:

Entries must contain the following attached documentation:
i. Link to a video recording of an “a cappella” performance, made in the last 3 years and with a minimum of 2 works. Youtube and/or any other video hosting service may be used (in case the video is private, credentials are required to access it).
ii. PDF specifying the pieces to be performed, indicating the duration of each piece of the chosen program and its author, to be included in the hand program. PDF scores of the pieces to be performed.
iii. Brief CV of the choir, as well as a biographical sketch of the choir’s director.
iv. A digital photograph of the Choir with a minimum resolution of 2MPix.
v. A form that clearly states the name, telephone number(s), e-mail and contact addresses of the group and/or the persons responsible for it.
7 – SELECTION:
The Artistic Commission of the Competition will select three choirs from among all the applicants and will communicate the result to the selected groups before 0:00 on February 28, 2025. The choirs not selected will not be notified and may be informed through the website of the Fundación Misterio de Obanos www.misteriodeobanos.org.
The order of performance will be established by drawing lots, which may be attended by a representative of each selected choir. It will be notified with due notice.
8 – FINAL PROVISIONS:
The Competition Organization reserves the right to be able to record, in any type of support, the works performed in the Competition, the choirs not being able to demand any right of interpretation and image, nor to refuse the possibility of total or partial broadcasting of the performances through radio, television and/or internet.
All amounts mentioned in the prizes are considered in full and before applying the tax legislation that may apply.
A travel allowance of 500 € is contemplated for choirs that have to travel from a distance of more than 250 Km. and proportional amounts for shorter distances, upon presentation of invoice.
The Organization reserves the right to modify any section of these rules, communicating it with sufficient notice.
Acceptance to participate in this Competition implies agreement with these Rules.
